IDEXX Laboratories, Inc , - is currently hiring a Scientific Research Associate II for our LPD ( Livestock, Poultry & Dairy) line of business.
Participates in research and development activities in support of new product development and/or product support of existing products. Utilizes established mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data within the scope of standard identifiable factors. Begins to presents data at internal Data Reviews. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and procedures.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Perform nucleic acid extractions from clinical samples using either manual or robotic methods
Perform real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays on either RNA or DNA targets
Manage incoming clinical samples (recording relevant sample information, maintain short and long term storage conditions, track sample inventories)
Collects, analyzes and organizes information/data according to established guidelines
Utilizes established methods and procedures to work within the lab
Recognizes areas of improvement; may review calculations and check others' notebooks
Plans for activities on a short-term basis; week to week.
May assist in ordering laboratory or general supplies
Works within a daily or weekly timeframe under general supervision
## Qualifications
EDUCATION :
BS in biotech/micro/molecular or equivalent with Masters a plus.
EXPERIENCE :
2
years of experience with a BS/BA or
0-2 years of experience with a Masters
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Experience in a laboratory setting with a solid understanding of many basic laboratory skills
Working knowledge of basic molecular procedures including but not limited to familiarity with nucleic acid purification, handling and storage, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
Exceptional documentation skills while maintaining an electronic laboratory notebook
Good communication skills written and oral
Ability to effectively communicate scientific data
Ability to follow documented procedures
Proficient with MS Office
Excellent organizational skills and basic planning skills
Comfortable with giving limited data presentations
Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within molecular biology/microbiology
Works under general supervision
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged periods sitting or standing necessary for meetings, laboratory assays or computer work required to consolidate and analyze data.
Adequate hand-eye coordination with repetitive movements and manipulations associated with typical laboratory equipment or processes (pipetting, sampling, harvesting, typing).
On occasion, may require lifting containers weighing up to 50 lbs. or moving heavier materials with the use of dollies or jacks.
Periods of time in cold room or freezer environments.
Periods of time in noisy manufacturing areas.
Periods of time utilizing protective equipment (masks, gloves, sleeves, safety glasses, lab coats, respirators, biosafety cabinets).
Specific vision abilities including close vision, depth perception and color vision.
Climbing, reaching, balancing, stooping or kneeling to access materials.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
While the primary position environment will be a combination of laboratory and office (cubicle) setting, other aspects may include:
Periods of time in cold room or freezer environments.
Periods of time in noisy manufacturing areas.
May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, radioisotopes, biological agents and biological fluids.
Will follow OSHA safety guidelines and company compliance issues related to people, equipment, chemicals, and biologicals.
Travel may be required as necessary for projects.
