Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland Westbrook, ME Westbrook, ME Part-time Full-time Part-time Full-time From $16 an hour From $16 an hour As the face and voice of the ARLGP to the adopting public, Adoption Counselors/Care Technicians are responsible for fostering a spirit of goodwill and trust between the public and the shelter, delivering superior customer service, maintaining clean, humane and healthy living conditions for pets in the shelter, advocating for animals in our care and in the community, educating the public about Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland services, procedures and policies, as well as basic animal care and health and behavior counseling.
The position requires exemplary phone and in-person customer service skills, and functioning at a high-level in a fast-paced, sometimes emotionally charged atmosphere.
ARLGP staff must interact with the public in all manner of transactions in a calm, professional, non-judgmental way.
Candidates must possess a high degree of initiative, be detail oriented, punctual, dedicated, adept at multi-tasking in a busy environment and be able to consistently contribute positively in order to function in a team atmosphere.
The people that excel in this position really enjoy managing multiple priorities, are able to stay good-natured and positive under stress and find working with the public genuinely enjoyable and energizing.
The ability to learn safe animal handling skills is required, as is the desire and demonstrated ability to become conversant in our behavior assessment program, the basics of training and common dog behaviors as well as basic animal health in order to assist the public with frequently asked questions and to provide post-adoption support.
Computer competency and the ability to work in a database is a must in order to process incoming animals efficiently and to maintain accurate animal records, as is the ability to type and use the internet.
Weekend shifts and occasional holiday work are required.
The position is full-time at 40 hours with necessary flexibility in scheduling.
It is primarily dog focused, but cross-training in feline and small animal areas will be required.
